Forklift jib booms, also referred to as crane jibs or lifting booms, are among the most useful attachments available for material handling equipment. They allow a standard forklift to perform tasks that would typically require a crane, making them a valuable addition to many workplaces.

This guide provides an overview of what to consider when selecting a jib boom and how to use it safely and effectively.

Understanding the Different Types
Forklift jib booms generally fall into two categories based on how they attach to the forklift:

Fork-mounted jib booms
These slide onto the forks of the forklift and are secured with locking pins. They are easy to install and remove, making them suitable for operations where the forklift needs to switch between standard fork work and crane-style lifting throughout the day.

Carriage-mounted jib booms
These mount directly onto the forklift carriage, allowing the forklift to position itself closer to the load. This design offers improved stability and visibility compared to fork-mounted models.

Within these categories, jib booms also vary in terms of boom design:

Fixed booms – Offer a set length and angle, suitable for repetitive tasks

Telescopic booms – Allow the operator to adjust the boom length in multiple stages, providing flexibility for different reach requirements

Height-adjustable booms – Can be angled upward to lift loads over obstructions or to different heights

Selecting the Right Model
When choosing a jib boom for your operation, consider the following factors:

Load capacity
Jib booms are available with a wide range of lifting capacities. Common models range from 1,000 kg to 5,000 kg or more. The capacity you need will depend on the weight of the loads you typically handle.

Reach requirement
Consider how far the load needs to be from the forklift. Telescopic models offer adjustable reach — for example, some extend from 2,000 mm to 3,700 mm. Fixed booms may offer shorter reach but are often more compact and easier to store.

Fork pocket dimensions
Ensure that the fork pockets on the jib boom are compatible with the fork size of your forklift. Common pocket dimensions include 190 mm x 90 mm and 160 mm x 60 mm.

Attachment method
Decide whether a fork-mounted or carriage-mounted design better suits your workflow. Fork-mounted models offer quick installation and removal, while carriage-mounted models provide greater stability and closer load positioning.

Finish
If the attachment will be used outdoors or in corrosive environments, consider a galvanized finish for added protection against rust. Painted finishes are suitable for indoor use.
