The crane is typically powered by a hydraulic system supplied from the vessel’s power source or a dedicated power pack. Hydraulic cylinders control each articulation point, providing movement of the boom sections as well as slewing (rotation) of the base. Marine articulated cranes are constructed with corrosion‑resistant materials and coatings, such as painted or galvanised steel and stainless steel hydraulic fittings, to withstand saline and humid marine environments.

Common applications include transferring cargo, equipment, or supplies between quay and deck, handling subsea gear, supporting maintenance tasks, and moving fishing nets or stores on workboats. The lifting capacity varies with the working radius and boom angle – a shorter reach generally allows heavier loads, while a longer extended reach reduces the safe working load. Operators can control the crane from a local panel or via a remote unit. A load chart provided by the manufacturer should be consulted before each lift. Regular inspection of hydraulic hoses, pivot pins, corrosion protection, and foundation bolts is recommended to help maintain safe operation.
