Knuckle Boom Cranes in Offshore and Marine Operations

Offshore lifting presents conditions that reward compactness and control as much as raw capacity. Deck space is limited, weather windows are narrow, and loads must often be transferred with precision between moving vessels or to subsea installations. The knuckle boom crane has become a common sight on offshore support vessels, platform supply ships, and construction units largely because its geometry suits these constraints.

The folded profile is a decisive factor. A knuckle boom can be stowed within a compact footprint along a vessel’s bulwark or in restricted deck areas, preserving working space for cargo, equipment, or personnel movement. This matters on vessels where every square metre of deck has an operational role. The articulated boom also allows lifts to be performed with a low working radius—in some offshore crane series, less than 10 metres—which supports careful placement near the vessel’s structure or alongside a platform.-19

Beyond stowage, offshore knuckle booms are frequently integrated with motion-compensation technology. Active heave compensation (AHC) winches allow the crane to maintain load control as the vessel moves with the sea state, a capability used in subsea construction, remotely operated vehicle (ROV) support, and installation work at depths of up to 3,000 metres. The crane’s hydraulic articulation complements these systems by enabling fine adjustments to boom angle and reach during a lift, rather than relying solely on winch movement.

The application range is broad. Offshore knuckle booms handle cargo transfer between supply vessels and installations, pipe handling on laying vessels, and deployment of subsea tooling. In the offshore wind sector, compact folding cranes are used for loading and unloading supply vessels and for material handling on substations, where space is scarce and lifting paths are constrained. The design does involve more moving parts than a stiff boom, which can mean higher maintenance attention, but for marine operators the combination of compact stowage, precise articulation, and compatibility with motion compensation continues to justify its place in the fleet.
