Key Safety Considerations When Operating Aerial Work Platforms

News 260

Operating an Aerial Work Platform requires proper training and adherence to safety guidelines. While AWPs improve access to height, they still involve risks such as tip-overs, falls, or collisions if not used correctly.

Pre-Operation Checks

Before using any AWP, a daily visual inspection is necessary. Operators should check:

  • Hydraulic fluid levels and for any leaks.
  • Tires (solid or pneumatic) for damage or proper inflation.
  • Guardrails, gates, and entry points – they must be secure.
  • Emergency lower controls and the platform’s emergency stop button.
  • Any visible cracks, missing pins, or loose bolts on the structure.

If any component is not functioning, the machine should be removed from service until repairs are completed.

Operating Guidelines

  • Stable Ground: Set the machine on firm, level ground. Outriggers or stabilizers (if equipped) must be fully deployed before raising the platform.
  • Load Capacity: Do not exceed the rated work load (shown on the machine’s decal). Overloading can cause tip-over or structural failure.
  • Fall Protection: Operators must wear a full-body harness with a lanyard attached to the designated anchor point inside the platform. Never stand on guardrails or climb out of the platform while elevated.
  • Clearance: Maintain distance from overhead power lines and other electrical hazards. Even non-metallic booms can conduct electricity under some conditions.
  • Traveling with Loads: For most AWPs, travel at height is not permitted. Lower the platform completely before moving the machine, unless the manufacturer explicitly allows elevated travel (and only on smooth, level surfaces).

Weather Conditions

Outdoor use in high winds, heavy rain, or lightning is not recommended. Each model has a maximum wind speed rating – always check before operation. Winds can destabilize a raised boom lift.

By following manufacturer instructions and workplace safety rules, operators can use AWPs effectively while managing foreseeable risks.
